The project will feature over 3 kilometers of separate tunnels for each direction of travel and is expected to return 6 hectares of green space to the city via the new Lanterna Park. Work on ‘Lotto A’, which includes the New Railway Tunnel and new port roads, is already progressing toward completion.

In the broader context of the Italian construction sector, Mauro Franzolini, general secretary of FenealUil, has warned of a complex transformation as extraordinary funding from the EU's Recovery and Resilience Facility (PNRR) concludes. Franzolini also highlighted a growing housing emergency in metropolitan areas, noting that current government plans lack sufficient economic resources to address rising rent and property prices.
