Aviation incidents involving cabin odors in Hawaii

Overview

In late September 2026, two separate aviation incidents involving cabin odors occurred on flights arriving in Honolulu.

On September 21, a Delta Air Lines flight from Maui to Seattle diverted to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport after passengers and crew reported significant fumes. During the incident, both pilots utilized oxygen masks due to eye irritation. Following the landing, fuel was observed discharging from the aircraft. Five individuals, including four passengers and one crew member, required medical attention for symptoms such as nausea and headaches.

On September 24, a Hawaiian Airlines Airbus A330-200 (operating as Alaska Airlines flight AS 803) traveling from Los Angeles to Honolulu also reported an unexplained odor. While the approximately 252 passengers on board did not require medical attention, seven flight attendants reported symptoms including headaches and nausea. Despite these symptoms, pilots continued the flight to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. Upon arrival, the affected crew members were evaluated by emergency medical personnel and released after outpatient examination; none required hospitalization.

Hawaiian Airlines is investigating the cause of the odor. Aviation safety experts noted that such incidents can sometimes be linked to substances like oil or hydraulic fluid entering the ventilation system, though no cause has been confirmed for this specific event. The aircraft, registered as N375HA, underwent technical inspection and was returned to regular passenger service approximately eleven hours after the incident. This event has drawn attention to ‘fume events’ in civil aviation, particularly following similar recent occurrences in the industry.
