Bahia infrastructure and highway development

Overview

Infrastructure development in Bahia continues through direct paving projects and large-scale highway concessions.

In the extreme south, paving works are advancing on the BA-001 highway in Prado. Additionally, the second stage of the BA-290 highway in Itanhém is underway, involving a R$ 31 million investment to connect the Bahia coast to Minas Gerais. Furthering regional connectivity, the Government of Bahia has declared a 248.4-hectare area as a matter of public utility to facilitate the paving of the BA-653 highway. This R$ 50.17 million project will cover 37.5 kilometers between Uruçuca and the Serra Grande district, with a projected 24-month construction timeline intended to improve tourism and rural transport in the Atlantic Forest region.

On a larger scale, the National Land Transport Agency (ANTT) has approved the bidding notice for the Rota 2 de Julho concession. This 30-year contract covers 653.3 kilometers of the BR-116 and BR-324 highways, with estimated total investments of R$ 14.33 billion, including R$ 10.52 billion planned for the first eight years. The project includes over 300 kilometers of road duplication, marginal roads, and pedestrian facilities. A key component is the implementation of the ‘Free Flow’ electronic tolling system. To support this, ANTT is conducting tests within a regulatory sandbox and opening a public hearing to propose a unified payment solution portal, which would allow drivers to manage payments for various federal highway concessionaires in one location.
