Balkan summer music festivals 2026
Overview
The Balkan summer music circuit continued through late August, with a focus on classical, chamber, and jazz music across Montenegro and Croatia.
In Budva, the XL Festival ‘Grad teatar’ featured a ‘Fratres’ concert at the Santa Marija church in Punta, where violinist Viktor Huter and pianist Sofija Jović performed works by Sergei Prokofiev, Francis Poulenc, and Arvo Pärt. Meanwhile, at Knežev dvor, a string quartet including Matej Mijalić, Marin Maras, Marko Genero, and Vid Veljak performed a repertoire ranging from Mozart to Ligeti, Webern, and Grieg.
International virtuosos also headlined coastal events. In Trogir, Croatia, the Guitar Masters Festival—part of the 56th Trogir Cultural Summer—featured Italian guitarist Aniello Desiderio at the Knežev Palace, performing works by Isaac Albéniz, Enrique Granados, Joaquin Malat, and Stephen Gossa. The festival has continued with performances by young Croatian guitarist Paula Ćurić.
New programming in Croatia includes the ninth edition of the Stradun Classic chamber music festival in Dubrovnik, running from August 28 to September 6, featuring violinist Stefan Milenković and cellist Mischa Maisky. On the island of Rab, the Klassisk i Sentrum festival runs from August 30 to September 12, serving as an international hub for young musicians through masterclasses, with the Baltic Sea Philharmonic scheduled to perform in early September.
In addition to classical events, the fourth Ponta Lopud Jazz Festival has commenced on the island of Lopud, featuring international artists and mentors such as Jamey Haddad and Thana Alexa, including a performance by Chilean musician Camila Meza. In Montenegro, the Portonovi destination hosted a summer program including the Bokeška ostrva regatta and opera performances.
