Bangladesh International Crimes Tribunal proceedings

Overview

The International Crimes Tribunal in Bangladesh has issued several significant rulings against former government officials and Awami League leaders.

In one case, the tribunal ordered the imprisonment of former Member of Parliament Abdur Rahman Badi, along with three military officers, regarding the 2018 killing of Teknaf municipal councilor Ekramul Haque. The court also called for the surrender of seven fugitives, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.

In proceedings related to the 2024 student-led uprising, International Crimes Tribunal-2 has issued death sentences for crimes against humanity. Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury led the court in sentencing seven senior Awami League leaders in absentia, as they are currently fugitives residing abroad. The convicted individuals include General Secretary Obaidul Quader, Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, former State Minister Mohammad Ali Arafat, Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain, and General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Enan.

The tribunal found the accused responsible for directing, inciting, or facilitating systematic attacks, killings, and torture against students and civilians. The court ordered the confiscation of half the assets of Quader, Nasim, Arafat, and Parash, with proceeds intended to compensate families of those killed or injured. This follows a previous death sentence handed to Sheikh Hasina for her role in the uprising, which the United Nations reports resulted in at least 1,400 deaths.
