BC Lions quarterback Nathan Rourke return and performance

Overview

Quarterback Nathan Rourke, the CFL’s 2025 Most Outstanding Player, missed the remainder of the July 17 game against the Edmonton Elks and the following two contests due to a left-shoulder injury. By early August, the BC Lions were monitoring his recovery and indicated that his return was being taken “day-by-day.” On August 5, the team announced that Rourke intended to rejoin the squad for the home game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at BC Place. On August 7, the Lions confirmed he had been cleared to start. In his return on August 8, Rourke completed 22 of 39 attempts for 370 yards and two touchdown passes, including an 82-yard strike to Justin McInnis, helping the Lions secure a 27-24 victory over the Tiger-Cats. This win, aided by a late 24-yard field goal from Sean Whyte, marked the Lions' first home win of the season. On August 12, the Lions extended their winning streak to three games with a 30-26 victory over the Calgary Stampeders at McMahon Stadium. Rourke led the offense with 301 passing yards, two touchdowns to Keon Hatcher, and a rushing touchdown. The win moved the Lions to a 4–5 record, allowing them to leapfrog Calgary and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for third place in the CFL West Division. On August 25, the Lions defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders 30-16 at BC Place. Rourke completed 22 of 28 passes for 355 yards and two touchdowns, earning CFL Player of the Week honors. During the contest, Rourke moved into fifth place on the Lions’ all-time passing yards list with 13,603 yards, surpassing Dave Dickenson. On August 31, the Lions secured their fifth consecutive victory by defeating the Ottawa Redblacks 45-24 at TD Place.
