Belgrade Mayor Aleksandar Šapić controversy

Overview

Belgrade Mayor Aleksandar Šapić is facing intense political pressure and calls for resignation following a physical confrontation with Tanja Mićić, a councilwoman from the Kreni-Promeni movement. Mićić alleges that Šapić struck her in the face, resulting in a fractured left nasal bone and part of the upper jaw, requiring surgery.

While Šapić denies hitting Mićić, claiming he only pushed her to defend himself from her husband during a scuffle, police conducted tests for alcohol and psychoactive substances in his blood, which returned negative results. The prosecutor’s office reported that Šapić was released because the injured parties were unavailable to provide statements during the night.

The Kreni-Promeni movement has filed a criminal complaint and demanded that the Third Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade act within 48 hours. More than 40 feminist organizations have joined the movement in calling for Šapić’s removal. President Aleksandar Vučić has stated there is “no justification for the Mayor’s actions.” Additionally, the incident has drawn attention to the safety of journalists following reports of verbal threats against N1 reporter Mladen Savatovic near Belgrade City Hall.
