Bitcoin investment performance and market projections
Overview
Recent financial analyses have highlighted Bitcoin’s performance and projected growth relative to traditional asset classes. A study by Taurex reported that Bitcoin achieved a 633.2% inflation-adjusted return, outperforming gold, silver, and the S&P 500, despite experiencing a 25% annual decline. While Bitcoin outperformed these assets, related proxy stocks such as MicroStrategy, Coinbase, Marathon Digital, Riot Platforms, and CleanSpark faced sharp declines in early October due to high beta and rising U.S. Treasury yields.
In its 31st annual Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions report, JPMorgan Asset Management included Bitcoin in its long-term projections for the first time. The firm forecasts a 10% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for Bitcoin over the next 10 to 15 years, positioning it as the highest-performing asset class in its model. This projection exceeds the expected returns for U.S. large-cap equities (7.5%), U.S. real estate investment trusts (8.2%), and physical gold (5.5%). The report also estimates Bitcoin’s arithmetic annual return at 20.9%.
Despite these optimistic forecasts, JPMorgan is not yet including Bitcoin in its primary portfolio allocation models or covariance matrices, citing high annualized volatility (estimated at 55%) and unstable correlations. The bank characterized Bitcoin as a speculative asset and a hedge against monetary easing. Modeling for Bitcoin’s return is weighted toward the growth of Bitcoin supply relative to the global money supply (65%), its potential role as a gold alternative (30%), and the utility of the Bitcoin network (5%). Alternative scenarios include a bullish case of 16.6% and a bearish case of -11.2%.
In late October 2026, Bitcoin’s market dominance reached 60%, its highest level since May 2026, even as the price fluctuated near the $82,000 to $84,000 range.
