Blue Devils Weiden DEL2 season and coaching update
Overview
The Blue Devils Weiden ice hockey team continues to navigate technical and disciplinary challenges during their DEL2 season. Following a preseason marked by a 2-7 loss to EV Landshut, the team faced early season struggles, including a penalty shootout defeat to EC Bad Nauheim and a 7-3 loss to the Bietigheim Steelers.
Weiden secured its first victory with a 3-2 win against Eispiraten Crimmitschau, a match marked by significant officiating controversy. Crimmitschau coach Jussi Tuores criticized the referees, alleging his team had to compete against ‘seven men’ due to four incorrect decisions. The penalties resulted in Crimmitschau serving 18 minutes, allowing Weiden to score on two power plays.
Despite this, momentum was interrupted by a 5-2 loss in the Oberpfalz derby against Eisbären Regensburg. Following the defeat, Vladislav Filin criticized the team’s ‘lack of structure.’
In a positive development, head coach Dave Matsos has returned to his position after a period of illness, with Mikhail Nemirovsky remaining as assistant coach. To strengthen the roster, the club signed defender Benedikt Jiranek and goalkeeper Kristian Hufsky on tryout contracts. Hufsky made a notable debut in a significant 5-1 away victory against the EC Kassel Huskies, breaking an eight-game losing streak against the team through tactical adjustments implemented by Matsos.
