BMW WorldSBK contracts: Oliveira 2026, Binder 2027
Overview
In early July 2026 BMW announced it would not exercise the contract‑extension option for Italian rider Danilo Petrucci, leaving his future with the factory WorldSBK team uncertain beyond the end of the season. The same notice said Portuguese rider Miguel Oliveira also faced an unclear outlook, with his management reportedly in talks with Ducati. BMW’s strategy appeared to shift toward targeting Spanish Moto2 leader Manuel González for the 2027 lineup, although González was reportedly eyeing a MotoGP seat. A few days later BMW confirmed it had declined the contract options for both Petrucci and Oliveira. The manufacturer said it would continue to monitor Petrucci’s adaptation to the M 1000 RR, noting that the decision did not necessarily mean he was out of the picture. Oliveira’s situation was linked to his recovery from a severe crash at Balaton, with BMW considering a new two‑year deal with an optional third year. Oliveira’s 2026 season saw three podiums, including a triple‑podium at his home round in Portimão, before a crash in the Hungary Superpole Race that fractured his clavicle and scapula and forced him to miss the remainder of the Hungarian weekend and the following rounds in Czechia and Aragon. He returned at Misano, retired mid‑race, and completed a full weekend only at Donington, where he struggled to finish in the top ten. Media reports suggested he might re‑sign with BMW through 2028 and was linked with a possible factory Ducati seat. On 29 July 2026 BMW confirmed that Brad Binder will join its factory World Superbike team for the 2027 season, riding the M 1000 RR alongside Oliveira, who has now extended his contract with the German manufacturer.
