Bolt and Lucid autonomous vehicle partnership
Overview
Bolt and Lucid Group have entered a strategic partnership to deploy a fleet of at least 25,000 autonomous vehicles, or robotaxis, across major European cities and the Middle East. The initiative will utilize Lucid’s Midsize electric vehicle platform and Nvidia’s Hyperion architecture to achieve SAE Level 4 autonomous driving capability.
Under the agreement, Bolt intends to own and operate the entire service, managing vehicle requirements, software, safety systems, charging infrastructure, and passenger experience. This project serves as a step toward Bolt’s long-term objective of operating 100,000 autonomous vehicles by 2035. Lucid will oversee the partnership through its Lucid Technologies division, focusing on AI and advanced driver assistance systems.
Following the announcement, Lucid Group shares experienced a 5.5 percent increase in pre-market trading. Despite the market reaction, some analysts remain cautious. Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Andres Sheppard maintained a neutral rating and an $8 per share price target, noting the potential for long-term revenue while expressing caution regarding the timeline for achieving widespread, fully autonomous operations.
The prospect of widespread deployment has raised concerns among ride-hailing drivers regarding job security. During a mobility conference in Lisbon, industry experts noted that while full autonomy may only replace human drivers in several decades, the transition will likely be gradual. While small-scale autonomous deliveries are already occurring in Estonia, systematic implementation in Portugal has not yet been established.
