Borussia Dortmund season start and leadership restructuring
Overview
Borussia Dortmund has maintained a perfect start to the Bundesliga season, securing their third consecutive victory with a 3-0 win against newly promoted SC Paderborn at Signal Iduna Park. Fábio Silva opened the scoring in the 5th minute following an assist from Serhou Guirassy. While Guirassy had two subsequent goals disallowed for offside, substitute Felix Nmecha secured the win with two late goals in the 80th and 89th minutes, the latter being a spectacular bicycle kick following a cross from Marcel Sabitzer. The win moves Dortmund to nine points from three matches, sharing the top spot in the league with Freiburg.
Coach Niko Kovac noted that while the team initially struggled to find their rhythm following midweek Champions League commitments, their “depth and quality were evident in the second half.” The match saw the return of defender Nico Schlotterbeck, who captained the side following an 84-day absence due to an ankle injury. Additionally, the club reported positive news regarding Konstantinos Karetsas, who has begun individual training following recent cardiovascular issues.
Off the pitch, the club has announced a significant restructuring of its executive management to ensure long-term strategic stability. Carsten Cramer has been promoted to Chairman of the Management Board with a contract extension through June 30, 2031. To ensure continuity, Sporting Director Lars Ricken has extended his term until 2030, while Thomas Treß and Svenja Schlenker will remain in their roles until June 2028. Club President Hans-Joachim Watzke stated the leadership team possesses the “experience and understanding of the club’s identity necessary to lead the organization into the future.”
