Borussia Mönchengladbach coaching change and crisis

Overview

Following a historically poor start to the season in which Borussia Mönchengladbach failed to secure a single point and conceded 16 goals in four matches, the club moved to change its coaching staff.

On September 22, the club officially appointed 53-year-old Alexander Blessin as head coach on a contract lasting until June 2028. He replaces Eugen Polanski, who departed after only three matches. Blessin, whose previous experience includes coaching FC St. Pauli, Genoa, and Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, emphasized the necessity of hard work and immediate results to stabilize the club. He also confirmed that Tim Kleindienst will remain the team captain. Interim coach Jan-Moritz Lichte will remain on staff as an assistant.

Blessin secured a winning start in his debut during a friendly match against Regionalliga side Sportfreunde Siegen, achieving a 3-0 victory. Despite the win, Blessin opted to maintain a scheduled four-day break for the players to allow them to clear their heads.

Addressing the club’s ongoing struggles, CEO Stefan Stegemann highlighted a critical lack of defensive stability as a primary issue, noting the need for increased discipline. The crisis has been compounded by massive personnel changes, including 52 movements within the squad and coaching staff over the summer. Football expert and former club captain Stefan Effenberg expressed concerns regarding the team’s psychological state, stating the squad appears ‘completely unsettled’ and lacks effective leadership on the pitch, specifically noting the inability to secure points in home matches against Elversberg and Mainz.
