Bosnia tax and customs enforcement

Overview

In early August 2026, the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s cantonal tax office in Zenica carried out a series of inspections across Zenica and nearby municipalities. The checks uncovered numerous violations, including unregistered workers, businesses operating without permits or fiscal devices, and failure to record sales. Six premises were sealed and fines totalling 31,700 KM were imposed, with officials indicating that regular inspections would continue.

The following day, a court confirmed an indictment against Emica Pezo, a customs official with the Uprava za indirektno oporezivanje. Prosecutors allege that between 2017 and 2019 she falsified import‑duty records, allowing a freight forwarder to evade roughly 370,000 KM in duties. Although part of the unpaid amount was later recovered, the case highlights ongoing efforts by Bosnian authorities to address tax and customs fraud.

Enforcement efforts expanded on August 13, when inspectors from the Novi Travnik Cantonal Tax Office conducted 20 inspections across Donji Vakuf, Bugojno, Kiseljak, Fojnica, and Travnik. Targeting the hospitality, trade, and gambling sectors, the inspections identified six unregistered workers, two businesses lacking proper permits, and nine taxpayers failing to use fiscal devices. These actions resulted in misdemeanor orders and fines totaling 45,750 KM.

On August 18, authorities intensified oversight during the Sarajevo Film Festival. The Tax Administration of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina conducted 173 inspections in the hospitality, trade, and bakery sectors, finding that 56% of taxpayers were non-compliant. This resulted in 30 sealed facilities and approximately 265,700 KM in fines. Simultaneously, Sarajevo Canton inspectors conducted 135 supervisions near festival locations, issuing 67 misdemeanor orders totaling 107,250 KM regarding fiscal compliance, sanitary conditions, and illegal transport services.
