Brazil expands mobile health units via ‘Agora Tem Especialis
Overview
Following earlier service interruptions in Pernambuco and various regional diagnostic campaigns, the Brazilian Ministry of Health has expanded the deployment of mobile medical units under the ‘Agora Tem Especialistas’ program to reduce specialized service waiting times.
In southern Bahia, specifically in Itabuna, a mobile unit for women’s health provides mammographies, ultrasounds, and biopsies for breast and cervical cancer. Ministry of Health superintendent Joanna Paroli noted that the unit detected cancerous lesions in approximately 20% to 30% of patients examined during its first three weeks. In Mato Grosso do Sul, a unit in Campo Grande performs up to 120 daily procedures, including X-rays and CT scans, with plans to expand services to all 79 municipalities in the state by year-end. Other specialized units, including one for eye health and cataract surgeries, are also operational.
Further deployments under the program, established by Law No. 15.233/2025, have reached Nerópolis (GO) and Goianinha (RN). These multidisciplinary units focus on early cancer diagnosis through mammographies, pelvic and transvaginal ultrasounds, and biopsies. In Nerópolis, the unit serves the local population plus 24 surrounding cities, while in Goianinha, it serves the municipality and 26 other cities. Access to these services requires patients to be pre-scheduled and referred by their municipal health secretariats via the Unified Health System (SUS).
