Brâncuși 150th anniversary celebrations

In mid‑July 2026, the 150th birth anniversary of Romanian sculptor Constantin Brâncuși was marked by a coordinated series of cultural events across Europe. A retrospective opened at Berlin’s Neue Nationalgalerie after a showing at Paris’s Centre Pompidou, while the London Philharmonic Orchestra staged a world‑premiere concert, ‘Debut Sounds: Hidden Realities’, at the Southbank Centre. Under the guidance of Sir George Benjamin and conductor William Cole, five young composers interpreted Brâncuși’s abstract style through orchestral music.

Romania continued the commemorations with several specialized events. On 25 July 2026, sculptor Bogdan Nueleanu opened the ‘Moving Elements’ exhibition at the National Museum ‘Constantin Brâncuși’ in Târgu Jiu. Additionally, the commune of Peștișani, Brâncuși’s birthplace, hosted the ‘Acasă la Brâncuși’ film festival from 4 to 8 August, featuring open-air screenings and workshops as part of a larger project celebrating the sculptor’s legacy.

Musical tributes also extended into late summer. At the Dinu Lipatti State Philharmonic, violinist Radu Dunca and pianist Ioan-Dragoș Dimitriu performed a recital titled ‘BRÂNCUȘI: ESENȚA’. The program utilized works by composers such as Gershwin, Satie, Ravel, and Kreisler to explore the artistic connections between musical composition and Brâncuși’s sculptures, focusing on themes of spirituality and modernity.

As part of the ongoing ‘Brâncuși150’ program, the Balkanik Festival will host a contemporary art program titled ‘Forms that are silent/ Forms that illuminate - Constantin Brâncuși at Balkanik Festival’ in Tei Park from 28 to 30 August. The program includes a 3.5-meter-tall monumental sculpture-installation by Raluca Pavel titled ‘The Bird (that does not touch the ground)’, which will feature video mapping by Adistu, and a collective performative piece called ‘The Table of Silence’ designed to invite public engagement through listening and presence.
