Brown marmorated stink bug management

Overview

Efforts to manage the invasive brown marmorated stink bug involve diverse biological and mechanical strategies across different regions.

In Turkey, agricultural authorities are employing a multi-faceted approach to protect hazelnut, tea, and other crops. In Samsun, the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry has deployed 26,000 pheromone traps using an ‘attract and destroy’ method to suppress populations during colder months. In Giresun, the Hazelnut Research Institute is conducting a two-year research project under TAGEM to optimize biological control by comparing the release of adult samurai wasps to the release of parasitized stink bug eggs; approximately 1.65 million samurai wasps have been released to date.

In Rize, authorities have launched a wintering combat campaign involving the distribution of 8,600 liters of biocidal products, 4,000 funnel traps, and 7,000 pheromones, alongside the release of 100,000 samurai wasps.

In Düzce, authorities mobilized in the Çilimli district, distributing plant protection products to 27 local mukhtars and providing technical training on spraying techniques. Esra Uzun, the Düzce Provincial Director, emphasized the need for a collective response to keep populations below the economic damage threshold using Integrated Pest Management principles.

In Ordu, the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry and local chambers of agriculture are training farmers on pesticide selection and application. Experts highlight that spraying wintering sites—such as attics, barns, and woodpiles—is critical to preventing crop damage in the following year.

In the United States, researchers at Cornell University’s Hudson Valley Research Laboratory have noted a decline in stink bug populations and fruit damage in the Hudson Valley over the past eight years, attributed to the introduction of the samurai wasp.
