Buena Vista Social Club musical expansion

Overview

The Tony and Grammy award-winning musical inspired by the Buena Vista Social Club is expanding its international and domestic reach.

In Mexico, the production managed by Ocesa Teatro is set to debut at the Teatro de los Insurgentes in Mexico City on November 12. This marks the first time the show is being replicated outside of the United States and serves as the first international Spanish-language season. The Mexican production will feature a live ensemble of musicians, dancers, and actors, with a cast including Analy as Omara Portuondo and Héctor Sandarti as Compay Segundo, alongside performers such as Coco Campo and Víctor Varona. Producer Julieta González stated that Mexico City was selected over other global cities due to the “historical cultural ties between Mexico and Cuba.”

In the United States, the musical has launched a national tour. Following performances at the Adrian Arsht Center in Miami and the Durham Performing Arts Center in North Carolina, the tour is scheduled to arrive in Fort Lauderdale at the Au-Rene Theater from October 13 through October 18. Directed by Saheem Ali with a script by Marco Ramírez, the show explores the lives and legacies of iconic Cuban musicians, such as Omara Portuondo, Ibrahim Ferrer, Compay Segundo, and Rubén González, navigating between pre-revolution Havana and their career resurgence during the 1990s. Choreographer Patricia Delgado noted that the production focuses on the emotional connection of the music and the personal histories of artists who found new opportunities late in their careers.
