Cal Crutchlow Silverstone MotoGP performance
Overview
MotoGP rider Cal Crutchlow, substituting for the injured Johann Zarco at LCR Honda, faced a challenging weekend at the British Grand Prix in Silverstone.
Initially, Crutchlow reported difficulties with wind conditions and a technical issue regarding the bike’s height-adjustment device. Despite these obstacles, he achieved the fastest lap of his career at the circuit and showed competitive pace, outqualifying Pol Espargaro. However, his return ended in a double DNF. After a collision during the Sprint race, Crutchlow crashed during the main grand prix on lap six due to a loss of front-end grip. He noted that when he attempted to brake in a normal position, “the front tyre just wouldn’t handle it and I basically crashed in a straight line.”
Following the event, the 40-year-old rider clarified that his participation was strictly temporary and does not signal a permanent comeback to full-time racing. Crutchlow, who retired from full-time competition after the 2020 season, explained that he accepted the role because he was specifically requested by Honda and LCR, stating, “I wouldn’t have done it for anyone else.” He emphasized that he has no intention of returning to the sport permanently, citing his age and his comfort with life outside of professional racing.
