Calci weekly market relocation dispute
Overview
The municipal administration in Calci finalized a decision to permanently relocate the weekly market to Piazza del Poggio, also known as ‘Piazza del Mercato’. This move was intended to clear Via Roma and Piazza Cavallotti to improve traffic flow and connectivity near essential services like schools and the post office.
Initially, the relocation faced formal opposition from Anva Confesercenti Provincia di Pisa. Mirco Sbrolli, the provincial president, argued the new location was unsuitable due to issues with accessibility, visibility, and pedestrian flow, stating the choice failed to account for the needs of market operators.
Following experimental phases and public consultations involving citizens, local merchants, and street vendor associations, the administration proceeded with the plan. The transition was supported by hundreds of signatures submitted to the municipality and aligns with campaign commitments made by the majority coalition. Mayor Valentina Ricotta stated that the more compact and rational arrangement in Piazza del Poggio aims to make the market more functional and recognizable for both street vendors and permanent businesses. The market is scheduled to return to the site starting October 7.
