Cancer awareness and fundraising initiatives
Overview
Community-led efforts to fundraise and raise awareness for cancer treatment and support have been observed across several countries.
In late July and early August, local initiatives focused on direct medical expense support. In Fresnillo, Zacatecas, a charity kermés was organized to fund treatment for Rogelio Martínez Silvarea. Simultaneously, in Panama, the ‘Relevo por la Vida’ relay event was held to benefit the Fundación Amigos de Niños con Leucemia y Cáncer (Fanlyc), supporting children and adolescents through participant-driven donations.
By September, the focus shifted toward broader awareness campaigns for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. In Mexico, the Leones de Yucatán baseball club partnered with the Mexican Association for Helping Children with Cancer (AMANC) to host events in Mérida, including a ribbon ceremony, a social run, and a cycling route to promote early detection. In Villa de Álvarez, Colima, the local administration collaborated with AMANC for awareness campaigns and the ‘Tapas que Curan’ collection, which gathers bottle caps and PET containers to fund support for children.
In Spain, organizations have also intensified efforts. ADANO hosted the 3rd edition of its ‘Fiesta Solidaria’ in Berriozar, featuring music and a charity raffle to support families. Additionally, in Almería, the Provincial Council joined the Association of Parents of Children and Adolescents with Cancer (ARGAR) for the ‘Enciende la Esperanza’ campaign, unveiling a Golden Ribbon on the Provincial Palace to sensitize society to the medical and logistical challenges faced by families.
