Cancer diagnosis and prevention initiatives in Chile

Overview

In August 2026, efforts to address cancer mortality in Chile progressed through both civil society and government initiatives.

The Chilean Lung Cancer Foundation was launched to increase disease visibility, support families, and advocate for public policies. Led by director Lyli Mikkelsen, the organization aims to dismantle stigmas and improve access to treatment. Experts noted that while four out of five patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage, early detection could increase survival rates to 90%. The foundation also highlighted a 30% increase in diagnoses among non-smoking women aged 25 to 40.

Concurrently, the Chilean Ministry of Health implemented a Universal Early Cancer Detection Strategy within primary healthcare. This 600 million peso initiative focuses on gastric and colorectal cancers across 28 communes, such as Chiguayante and Curanilahue, using non-invasive tests to reduce waiting lists for endoscopies and colonoscopies. The government intends to expand this program to an additional 80 municipalities by 2027.

To further strengthen the public healthcare network, the Ministry introduced the 2026-2030 Oncology Investment Plan. This plan includes 25 projects linked to the National Cancer Plan, with 10 currently under execution in various regions including Calama, Arica, and Valparaíso. In the Biobío region, a 100 billion CLP Macroregional Oncology Center is planned for Concepción to provide high-complexity services like radiotherapy. The national goal is to ensure all regions have access to complex oncological services by 2035 and to increase the number of linear accelerators for teletherapy from 19 to 24 by 2030.
