Catanzaro urban and economic development

The Municipality of Catanzaro has introduced a two-million-euro initiative to revitalize local businesses through the “Regeneration, cohesion and sustainability for the future of the city” program. Funded by the Calabria Fesr Fse+ 2021-2027 regional program, the investment is split between two notices: 600,000 euros for projects in the historic center and 1.4 million euros for businesses in the historic center and the Lido, Santa Maria, and Gagliano neighborhoods.

However, the administration faces political criticism regarding the management of the Giovino waterfront. Opponents have accused officials of “programmed desertification,” alleging that the revocation of state beach concessions has caused business closures, job losses, and physical degradation of the area. Critics are reportedly preparing to file complaints with the Court of Auditors and the Guardia di Finanza to investigate these administrative decisions.

In recent urban management developments, the city has approved a resolution to explore waste tax incentives. This plan aims to offer potential TARI reductions for residents who use municipal collection centers correctly. To support this, the city intends to upgrade the Viale Magna Grecia collection center with RFID systems and computerized weighbridges to ensure data precision.

Additionally, the municipality has launched a tender for the demolition of the former G. Mazzini Institute. This €1.4 million demolition serves as the first phase of a larger €7 million project funded by the Cohesion Development Fund, which seeks to transform the Nicholas Green area into a hub for commercial and artisanal activities.
