CFL playoff race developments

Overview

The Canadian Football League (CFL) playoff race has intensified across both divisions. In late September, the Toronto Argonauts maintained momentum with three consecutive wins, highlighted by a Grey Cup rematch against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. At that time, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers were playing without quarterback Zach Collaros, while the Montreal Alouettes held a significant lead in the East Division. By early October, the focus shifted to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers' struggle to maintain playoff hopes with a 7-7 record, as they competed for a West Division crossover spot. Meanwhile, the Montreal Alouettes, holding an 11-3 record, sought to clinch the East Division. Despite a recent defensive decline, Montreal remained undefeated at home and expected the return of key players from injury for their matchup against Winnipeg. As the regular season concluded in late October, the Montreal Alouettes secured first place in the East Division with a 13-4 record, earning a first-round playoff bye. The Toronto Argonauts finished second in the East with a 9-8 record. However, the Argonauts entered their regular-season finale against Montreal without quarterback Chad Kelly, who was ruled out due to a knee injury sustained in a loss to the Ottawa Redblacks. Tucker Horn was slated for his first career start in that matchup, while Nick Arbuckle was held out to preserve his health for the postseason. In a critical regular-season finale, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, holding an 8-9 record, faced a do-or-die matchup against the BC Lions in Vancouver. A victory was required for Winnipeg to secure a postseason spot. The Lions (10-7) had already finalized second place in the West Division and were expected to rest key starters, including quarterback Nathan Rourke, with backup Kaidon Salter slated to start.
