Chicago Bears RB Kyle Monangai knee injury update

Overview

During the Chicago Bears training camp, running back Kyle Monangai has dealt with recurring injury concerns. Initially, Monangai was diagnosed with a soft-tissue injury that head coach Ben Johnson described as short-term.

Monangai later left a non-padded practice after injuring his right knee during a drill involving defensive tackle Grady Jarrett. While he was able to limp off the field without assistance, the severity of the knee injury remained uncertain pending further medical evaluation.

Following medical tests, the injury was identified as a hyperextended right knee. Monangai is now considered “week-to-week,” and head coach Ben Johnson indicated that his availability for the Week 1 season opener is in jeopardy. While an MRI provided a “positive outlook,” the injury may cause him to miss multiple weeks of action.

If Monangai is unable to play at the start of the season, the Bears may rely more heavily on D'Andre Swift, Roschon Johnson, Britain Brown, and Salvon Ahmed. The team will continue to monitor Monangai’s progress as they prepare for a preseason matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.
