Chido Obi-Martin loan move developments

Overview

Manchester United is seeking a loan move for 18-year-old striker Chido Obi-Martin to facilitate his development. The club aims to send the player, who is eligible for Nigeria, to a continental European club where he can gain regular first-team minutes in a less physically demanding environment.

Negotiations were initially centered on a potential move to Feyenoord, with Manchester United reportedly setting a price tag of €5 million. Such a move in Rotterdam had raised questions regarding the playing time of 19-year-old talent Shaqueel van Persie, who was working to regain match rhythm following a significant injury.

Chido Obi has since reached an agreement to join Dutch Eredivisie club Willem II on a season-long loan. The deal, which runs until the end of the 2025/26 campaign, does not include an option for Willem II to sign the player permanently. While the English transfer window has closed, the move is able to proceed through the Dutch market.

Obi, a former Arsenal academy player and Danish youth international of Nigerian descent, made his senior debut for Manchester United during the 2024-25 season, appearing in seven Premier League matches and one FA Cup match under manager Ruben Amorim. He has primarily been utilized in United’s Under-21s and FA Youth Cup squads.

Following the completion of the signing, it was noted that Obi previously made history as Manchester United’s youngest-ever Premier League starter during a match against Brentford. His career has been characterized by high scoring rates in youth competitions. Upon joining Willem II, Obi expressed his intention to use the loan period as a stepping stone to gain experience and contribute to the team. His trajectory has drawn comparisons to Alexander Isak, who also utilized a loan spell at Willem II to advance his career.
