Child wandering incidents in Brazil

Reports from Brazil describe separate incidents involving young children wandering alone.

In Botucatu, São Paulo, a non-verbal child with characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder was found safe after wandering through the Altos da Serra neighborhood. Because the child could not communicate his address, local authorities and residents searched the area until he recognized his home. The Tutelary Council intervened, placing the children in the care of their maternal grandmother.

In Braço do Norte, Santa Catarina, an 18-month-old toddler escaped from a municipal daycare that was undergoing renovations. Security footage captured the child walking approximately 50 meters, crossing a busy road, and falling while attempting to climb a sidewalk before reaching his mother’s workplace. The child was discovered after knocking on a glass door at the office, where an employee assisted him. No injuries were reported.

Following investigations, the Civil Police of Santa Catarina indicted the daycare director and a security guard for ‘abandonment of an incapable person’. Findings indicated that the facility’s access gate was being kept open due to renovations and that the security guard was not present at the unit at the time of the escape, leaving the entrance unsupervised. The Municipal Secretariat of Education and Sports has also initiated an administrative inquiry to review the facility’s protocols and staff conduct.
