Chile expands family cash subsidies
Overview
In July 2026, the Chilean government introduced the Automatic Family Subsidy, a monthly cash benefit automatically paid to low-income households with children without an application process. Eligibility is based on a lack of social security coverage and placement in the poorest 40% of the population, with higher payments for children with disabilities.
In August 2026, the Ministry of Development Social and Family announced an extraordinary increase to the heating subsidy for approximately 37,000 families in the Aysén region. To address rising fuel costs, a one-time payment of 25,000 pesos per home was added, raising the total benefit to 125,000 pesos. Minister María Jesús Wulf stated the measure responds to the “essential need for heating in the region.”
Additionally, a legislative project is advancing through Congress that proposes a one-time economic benefit of $30,000 per child to assist vulnerable households. This proposed benefit targets children aged 0 to 13 in households within the most vulnerable 80% of the Social Household Registry. The proposal also seeks to include foster families and pregnant women. If passed, the distribution is expected to be automatic for those meeting the requirements.
