Overview

In late July 2026, Chile’s National Prosecutor Ángel Valencia announced several senior judicial appointments. On 26 July, lawyer Rodrigo Peña Sepúlveda was designated as the new Regional Prosecutor for the Maule region, set to begin an eight-year term on 4 September, succeeding Julio Contardo. Peña’s background includes extensive experience in violent crimes, procedural resources, money-laundering, and advisory roles within the public prosecution service.

On 31 July, two additional appointments were made. María Alejandra Jorquera was sworn in as an adjunct prosecutor for the Alto Hospicio commune in the Tarapacá region, reinforcing criminal investigation capacity in the north. Simultaneously, Nayalet Mansilla, the first woman to serve as regional prosecutor of Ñuble, prepared to step down on 8 August to transition to an adjunct role in the Metropolitan East office, focusing on sexual crimes. Mansilla highlighted challenges linked to migration and the need for specialized police units.

By late August, the selection process expanded to the La Araucanía region. Following the departure of Roberto Garrido Bedwell, who moved to the Biobío regional post, five candidates—Alberto Chiffelle Márquez, Héctor Leiva Martínez, José Ramírez Berenguer, Claudia Turra Lagos, and Cristian Voullieme León—presented their proposals before the Temuco Court of Appeals on 25 August. A public hearing aims to establish a shortlist of three finalists for the National Prosecutor’s final selection.
