Ole Miss defeats LSU 32-24; rises to No. 4 in AP Poll

Overview

The 2026 college football season has been marked by high roster turnover and intense rivalries, specifically the Week 3 matchup between No. 7 LSU and No. 8 Ole Miss in Oxford, Mississippi. This contest represents the first time since 1962 that both programs have held top-10 rankings simultaneously. Ole Miss secured a 32-24 victory in the highly anticipated Magnolia Bowl at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss led the Rebels with 363 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, and a decisive fourth-quarter rushing touchdown to seal the win. Although LSU mounted a mid-game surge that narrowed a 24-7 halftime deficit to 24-21, a late interception by Jaylon Braxton and a field goal by Lucas Carneiro helped secure the victory for Ole Miss. LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt finished the game with 158 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

The matchup was defined by a hostile environment for LSU head coach Lane Kiffin, who returned to Oxford after leading Ole Miss for five seasons. Tensions remained high regarding the harassment of Kiffin’s daughter, Landry, an Ole Miss student, following reports of offensive banners targeting her on campus and social media activity regarding the rivalry. Earlier in the game, Ole Miss star running back Kewan Lacy exited in the third quarter with an apparent upper-body injury to his left shoulder.

Following the win, Ole Miss has risen to No. 4 in the AP Top 25 Poll. The Rebels now prepare to face No. 21 Florida in Gainesville, a matchup analysts suggest could be a “potential trap game” due to the challenges posed by Florida’s Jadan Baugh and Aaron Philo. LSU looks to recover ahead of a Week 4 clash against Texas A&M in Baton Rouge.
