Cosenza Calcio stadium access and security disputes
Overview
Cosenza Calcio has faced significant logistical and legal challenges regarding stadium access and match conditions. In early August, the club sought an urgent appeal with Italy’s Consiglio di Stato to overturn a Tar della Calabria ruling that ordered the closure of the Stadio Gigi Marulla. The club aimed to suspend municipal orders that threatened to block all sporting activities at the venue starting 17 August.
By late August, the focus shifted to match security and spectator restrictions for upcoming fixtures. Potenza Calcio filed an appeal with the TAR to contest a decision by the Crotone Prefecture to hold a Serie C match against Cosenza behind closed doors on 29 August. The prefecture cited structural deficiencies at the Ezio Scida stadium, potential friction between fan groups, and logistical concerns regarding supporter travel. Potenza President Donato Macchia challenged these grounds, noting that a recent Coppa Italia match between the teams was held with spectators present.
In early September, Cosenza secured permission from the Council of State to return to the San Vito-Gigi Marulla stadium, resolving its legal dispute with the municipality. However, the quality of the playing surface emerged as a critical issue. Following reports of yellowing and thinning grass, the Committee for the Analysis of Security in Sporting Events (CASMS) and the Prefect of Crotone determined the pitch is unusable.
Consequently, the match against Cavese scheduled for 12 September will be played behind closed doors at the Ezio Scida stadium in Crotone. The deterioration is attributed to a lack of irrigation since May and the expiration of a maintenance contract, specifically involving pump failures in the irrigation system. This has prompted potential legal disputes between the club and the Municipality of Cosenza regarding repair responsibilities.
