Criminal activity and law enforcement in Torre Annunziata

Overview

In Torre Annunziata, law enforcement activities have targeted organized crime and criminal evasion. An investigation led by the Naples District Anti-Mafia Directorate resulted in nine arrests, including seven prison sentences, following a violent conflict between the Gionta clan and the ‘IV Sistema’ group. The investigation, which stemmed from a May 2025 brawl at a shopping center, uncovered a struggle for territorial supremacy involving charges of robbery, extortion, and weapons possession aggravated by mafia-style methods.

Recent developments highlight escalating tensions involving the Gionta clan. Carmela Gionta, sister of boss Valentino Gionta, drew controversy by publicly attacking social media commemorations of murdered journalist Giancarlo Siani. This friction occurred alongside reports of armed retaliation; following an assault on two Gionta affiliates at a Pompeii shopping center, a commando unit—reportedly led by Valentino Gionta senior’s nephew—carried out an attack. The Naples DDA and local police are using surveillance and intercepted communications to track the group, including their involvement in a shooting near La Provolera.

The investigation into the Gionta and ‘IV Sistema’ conflict reached a significant milestone with the arrest of Valentino Gionta Jr. He was discovered hiding in a secret compartment within his home, accessible via a remote-controlled trapdoor. His apprehension concludes the search for suspects involved in the May 2025 Maximall Pompeii incident, bringing the total number of investigated individuals to ten.

In a separate incident, Carabinieri arrested two men after a Seat vehicle carrying five occupants rammed a patrol car on Viale Manfredi during an attempted stop. The collision caused minor injuries to the crew leader. While Martini Diordjevic, 25, and Stele Jovanovic, 32, were apprehended, three accomplices fled on foot. Officers recovered burglary tools and portable radios from the vehicle.
