Criminal legal proceedings in the Balkans

Overview

Legal proceedings are advancing in criminal cases across the Balkans, specifically involving murder and prison-related charges in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. In Croatia, the Šibenik County Court has concluded the trial of Kristijan Aleksić, who has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the premeditated murder of 19-year-old Luka Milovac in Drniš. Aleksić, 50, pleaded guilty to aggravated murder and the illegal manufacture and possession of weapons. During the proceedings, it was established that Aleksić targeted Milovac, a food delivery driver, by luring him into his home under the pretense of having a leg injury. The attack involved an improvised firearm manufactured using online instructions and a military knife. Aleksić, a repeat offender who previously served 12 years for a 1994 murder, stated he committed the crime to end up in prison due to mounting debts and the death of his mother, remarking, ‘I was tired of life, I had nothing left to borrow.’ He also noted that he did not target a specific individual but rather any delivery driver who arrived at his door. Showing no remorse, he stated, ‘I do not regret it. I only regret the boots I tore’ while fleeing the scene. In addition to his primary sentence, Aleksić received two separate sentences of two and three years for weapons-related crimes. The court also ordered him to pay 50,000 euros in damages to the Milovac family and cover all legal costs. The case has prompted the Croatian government to propose legislative changes to introduce life imprisonment for the most serious crimes. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mevlid Jašarević, a Serbian citizen, is scheduled for release from prison on October 27. He faces charges for allegedly threatening prison staff at the Vojkovići facility.
