Criticism of Meloni administration in Italy

Political figures in Italy have leveled various criticisms against Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s administration regarding regional neglect and political direction.

Enrico Pittiglio, the mayor of San Donato Val di Comino, criticized the government for a lack of tangible support and direct engagement for the Valle di Comino region. While acknowledging the cultural recognition of the area, Pittiglio argued that local initiatives like the Festival delle Storie do not receive necessary assistance from the Ministry of Culture or the Lazio Region, making it difficult to promote internal areas facing a loss of resources and services.

In a separate critique during a regional Unity Party festival, Senate Democratic Party leader Francesco Boccia claimed the Meloni government has abandoned Southern Italy, specifically noting a lack of action for Calabria. Boccia also characterized the political landscape as a “derby” between Meloni and Roberto Vannacci, suggesting that Vannacci’s rise signifies a radicalization of the right and a “regression of 80 years” resulting from the administration’s policy failures.

Expanding on these critiques at a festival in Lamezia Terme, Boccia challenged the administration to utilize approximately 14 billion euros in available energy budget to reduce costs for families and businesses, labeling the current energy policy a failure. He proposed using these funds to reduce energy vulnerability and build long-term autonomy rather than relying on temporary emergency measures.

As by-elections approach in Reggio Calabria, political tensions have intensified. While Boccia framed the local contests as a national political preview, Fratelli d’Italia’s Giovanni Donzelli defended the Meloni government, praising its investments in the South and addressing local issues such as the abolition of the car tax.
