Croatia family support measures

Overview

In late July 2026, Croatia announced a pilot vehicle-subsidy scheme for families with four or more children, co-funding up to 50% of a seven-seat vehicle, with a maximum grant of €15,000 and a total budget of €2.2 million. Minister Ivan Šipić described the measure as an investment in families to ease daily logistics such as trips to school, kindergarten, and medical appointments. A public call for applications, including detailed eligibility criteria and documentation requirements, is expected in September.

On 2 August, the Ministry of Demography and Immigration, together with the “Croatia for Children” foundation, clarified that the grant applies to both new and used cars. Eligible models include the Renault Grand Scenic, Volkswagen Touran, Škoda Kodiaq, Dacia Jogger, Peugeot 5008, Citroën C4 SpaceTourer, Ford Galaxy, SEAT Tarraco, and Kia Sorento.

A day after the vehicle announcement, the government expanded the “Baka-djed servis” grandparent-care allowance to additional municipalities, providing €100–€360 per child per month to grandparents caring for pre-school grandchildren. Originally piloted in Samobor in 2022, the allowance has rolled out to several other municipalities, including Sveta Nedelja, Križevci, Bizovac, Sveti Petar u Šumi, Ploče, and Nova Rača. In Samobor, 49 grandparents are currently receiving the benefit.

Both initiatives are part of a broader demographic strategy to reduce logistical and childcare costs for larger families.
