Croatian Homeland War anniversaries

Overview

In late August and early September 2026, various Croatian cities held commemorations marking the 35th anniversary of significant events during the Homeland War.

In Sinj, officials and veterans gathered to honor the defense of the Cetina region and the attacks on former Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) barracks that occurred on August 25, 1991. The ceremonies included laying wreaths and a memorial mass to honor fallen defenders.

In Sisak, activities marked the 35th anniversary of the establishment and combat operations of the 120th Croatian Army Brigade, ‘Ban Toma Bakač’. Commemorative activities included lighting candles at monuments in Dr. Franjo Tuđman Park and laying wreaths at the Viktorovac City Cemetery to honor the 27 members of the brigade who died during the conflict. Established on September 1, 1991, under Brigadier General Vlado Hodalj, the brigade comprised approximately 3,000 citizens. The program also includes exhibitions, a solemn academy, the XIV. Marijan Celjak Memorial Aeroshow, and marks the liberation of the Barutana barracks on September 3, 1991, as well as the 35th anniversary of the death of Brigadier Marijan Celjak.

In the Jasenaš settlement near Virovitica, ceremonies were held in Milanovac and Jasenaš to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the area's liberation in September 1991. Events included laying wreaths, lighting lanterns at a memorial for fallen defenders, and a Holy Mass at the Parish Church of Blessed Aloysius Stepinac. Local and national officials, including Virovitica Mayor Ivica Kirin and representatives from the Ministry of Croatian Veterans, attended the proceedings.
