Cruz Azul Femenil coaching change and misogyny controversy
Overview
Following a historic 10-0 defeat against Club América in the Apertura 2026 Liga Femenil BBVA, Cruz Azul Femenil dismissed head coach Israel Del Real and appointed former Mexican national team player Guadalupe Worbis as the new head coach.
Subsequent controversy emerged regarding misogynistic comments made by content creators Santiago Domínguez, Mike ‘Máquina del Mal’, and Criss Ángel on the podcast ‘Pláticas del mal’. The creators used derogatory and sexualized language toward the players, suggesting they should be directed toward sex work, such as ‘table dances’ or OnlyFans, rather than professional football.
Cruz Azul Sporting Director Mafer Pons described the remarks as ‘absolutely inadmissible’ and ‘offensive and degrading.’ In response, the club has made a permanent decision to sever all ties with the creators and any companies that sponsor their program. This move has already resulted in the podcast losing its primary sponsor, Team Mexico, which stated the remarks did not align with its corporate values.
Cruz Azul is pursuing civil and criminal legal action against the individuals involved, citing violations of the General Law on Women's Access to a Life Free of Violence. The club also expressed support for Pons, who has received personal threats, and has implemented protection measures for her while requesting intervention from the Secretaría de las Mujeres.
Liga MX Femenil and the Secretaría de las Mujeres have both condemned the remarks as digital and gender-based violence. The league asserted that football debate cannot justify ‘violence, discrimination, or expressions that denigrate women,’ and is working with its Gender Committee to strengthen mechanisms to address digital violence. Additionally, Pachuca Femenil player Yirleidis Minota publicly supported the Cruz Azul players, stating that those who do not enjoy women's football should simply stop watching it.
