Cultural and academic programming in Spain

Overview

Spain is hosting a variety of cultural programs and academic events focused on performing arts and historical heritage. Initial programming for the autumn and winter 2026 seasons includes diverse theatrical and musical offerings across several regions. Notable activities include structural reforms at the Teatre Principal in Valencia, the expansion of the València Music City initiative, and lyrical seasons at the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville. Other regional highlights involve short film festivals in Teruel and symphonic performances in Alicante. Subsequent events shift focus toward academic and historical commemorations. The University of Extremadura is organizing the tenth Bartolomé de Torres Naharro International Congress to study 16th-century Spanish theater. Additionally, the Teatro Liceo in Salamanca is hosting a documentary cycle marking the 500th anniversary of the School of Salamanca, exploring the history of the Hispanic community and early globalization. Recent programming expands into specialized festivals and musical congresses. In Granada, the 11th TIF Festival for Children, Youth, and Family will feature 45 performances between November and December. Almería is set to host the inaugural Almanzora Sound Festival to promote inland tourism, alongside the 34th Almerijazz International Festival in November. In Madrid, JAZZMADRID 2026 will showcase genres ranging from Afro-Cuban jazz to electronic music. Furthermore, Albacete will host the first National Congress of the Spanish Confederation of Musical Societies (CESM) in mid-October, which includes a charity concert at the Teatro Circo to benefit the Residencia-Asilo de San Antón. Autumn theatrical programming continues with the XXII Otoño de Teatro de Villacarrillo, featuring the play ‘Lorca Perdida’ by Teatro La Paca, which uses Federico García Lorca’s poetry to examine themes of memory and LGTBI+ rights. Other regional performances include the contemporary circus piece ‘Sísifos’ by UpArte and the early childhood production ‘Bola’ by L´Horta Teatre.
