Cultural and religious celebrations in Barahona
Overview
The municipality of Barahona has organized a series of cultural and religious commemorations for late 2026. Through Resolution No. 21-2026, the Municipal Council declared October 7 as a “Municipal Rejoicing Day” (Día de Regocijo Municipal) to honor the patron saint, Nuestra Señora del Rosario. This designation establishes the date as a non-working day to preserve local traditions and cultural identity.
In conjunction with these religious observances, the region will host various events. On September 26, a horseback procession will commemorate the 1892 visit of José Martí to the area, an event attended by the Cuban Ambassador to the Dominican Republic. The procession follows the route Martí traveled while seeking solidarity for Cuban independence.
The Barahona Patron Saint and Cultural Festivals, scheduled from October 2 to October 7, officially commenced with a coronation ceremony at the Luis Ayala Hall. During the opening, Mayor Míctor Fernández crowned 19-year-old university student Lukeisy Yaneri Betances Gómez as the queen of the festivities, with 19-year-old gymnastics teacher Olgarina Ramírez García named vice-queen. The mayor emphasized that these representatives will promote local values and identity throughout the scheduled activities, which include a musical lineup featuring artists such as Joe Veras, Lápiz Conciente, La Insuperable, and Secreto.
