Cultural heritage festivals in Calabria
Overview
In late August, officials in Reggio Calabria presented the second edition of ‘Il settembre di Demetra’, a cultural festival organized by the Associazione Italiana Parchi Culturali Nazionale ETS (AIParC). Scheduled from August 31 to September 7, the event aims to connect museums, theaters, and castles to stimulate local tourism and the economy by leveraging the region’s Magna Graecia heritage.
Throughout September, various other cultural initiatives are scheduled across Calabria. In Locri Epizefiri, programs focus on archaeology and history, including a book presentation on the correspondence between the Kingdom of Naples and the Medici court and free admission to state museums. The Epic Arghìa Festival is set for mid-September at the Greco-Roman Theatre, featuring contemporary classical theater. Additionally, the ‘L’Abbazia al Tramonto’ project in Lamezia Terme will launch on September 5, using storytelling and guided tours to promote the Abbey of Sant’Eufemia.
As a climax to the festival, the IX edition of the National Demetra ‘Irene Tripodi’ Award is scheduled to take place at the Rocco Polimeni Tennis Club in Reggio Calabria. The eight-day program explores literature, archaeology, history, heritage, and contemporary art, with a focus on the identity of Reggio Calabria and its Mediterranean connections. Activities include the ‘Calabria Terra Mia’ competition for high school students, various exhibitions, and musical performances, such as a lyrical concert by the ‘Francesco Cilea’ Conservatory. Salvatore Timpano, president of A.I.Par.C., stated the initiative seeks to create a unified cultural project centered on themes of identity, memory, and rebirth.
