Cybercrime and online betting investigations in India

Overview

Law enforcement agencies in India have conducted several operations targeting digital crimes, specifically online betting and cyber harassment.

In Madhya Pradesh, police arrested individuals involved in separate digital offenses. In Indore, the Crime Branch apprehended Abhishek Agarwal, a fugitive linked to an online cricket and casino betting racket. This arrest follows a May 6 raid where seven individuals were caught operating a network using laptops and mobile phones to facilitate transactions via digital points. In Satna, Nagod police arrested Virendra Singh for using a fake Instagram account to post obscene comments.

In Uttar Pradesh, Etawah Police dismantled an interstate gang accused of defrauding over 500 people through online gaming and betting by using villagers' identity documents to secure SIM cards and bank accounts.

Recent operations have expanded the scope of these investigations. In Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, authorities arrested six individuals for operating an online betting racket through gaming platforms using UPI IDs and QR codes. Investigators seized 41 mobile phones and seven laptops, focusing on the use of mule accounts to route funds.

In Thane, Maharashtra, police arrested 10 people for allegedly running a work-from-home scam. The suspects reportedly lured job seekers by collecting bank passbooks, ATM cards, and SIM cards, then diverted the stolen funds into illegal online betting and gaming sites. During a raid in Mumbai’s Aarey Colony, officials seized 32 mobile phones, 46 ATM cards, 40 SIM cards, and four laptops. The suspects, originating from Bihar, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh, remain in custody.
