Rising digital fraud and cybersecurity threats in Spain

Digital fraud cases reached 45,445 in a single year, a 19% increase compared to 2024. Online fraud accounted for four out of every ten reported incidents, with phishing alone reaching 25,133 cases.

Specific threats include a record surge in ‘quishing’ (QR code phishing), where Spain accounts for 17% of global detections. ESET reports that QR-based links appear in approximately 11% of all phishing emails, generating roughly 100,000 detections monthly, particularly during the summer travel season.

Organizational vulnerabilities persist, as many Spanish companies lack Security Operations Centers (SOC) or incident response plans. In July, organizations recorded an average of 2,068 weekly cyberattacks, primarily affecting government, financial services, and consumer goods sectors. Additionally, malware campaigns targeting small and medium-sized enterprises use tools like the Snake Keylogger to steal credentials via fraudulent invoices. In the business sector, social engineering remains a major threat, with identity impersonation accounting for 18% of corporate inquiries.
