Czech coronation jewels exhibition at Prague Castle

Overview

The ‘Habsburg 500’ exhibition at Prague Castle, which commemorates the 500th anniversary of the Habsburg dynasty’s ascent to the Czech throne, has concluded. Held in the Vladislav Hall of the Old Royal Palace, the event ran through September 28, 2026.

The exhibition provided public access to significant artifacts, including the St. Wenceslas Crown, the royal scepter, the orb, and coronation robes dating to 1653. The display traced the history of these insignia from their 16th-century storage at Karlštejn Castle and their relocation to Vienna during the Thirty Years' War, through to their return to Prague in 1791.

While the exhibition is a temporary event established by President Petr Pavel, the jewels themselves are permanently stored in the Crown Chamber within St. Vitus Cathedral. Access to the permanent storage requires the presence of seven specific keyholders: the President, the Prime Minister, the speakers of both parliamentary chambers, the Archbishop of Prague, the Mayor of Prague, and the Dean of the Metropolitan Chapter of St. Vitus. The exhibition drew large crowds of tourists and locals, following a previous year that attracted over 51,500 visitors.
