Czech public space and playground revitalization

Czech communities and cities are implementing various projects to revitalize public spaces and enhance recreational opportunities for families.

Initial efforts focused on small-scale, participatory initiatives, such as a chalk art project in Žďár nad Sázavou and the construction of a DIY treehouse in Prštice. Subsequent developments involved larger-scale urban reconstructions, including an eight million CZK renovation of a playground near a central maternity hospital in Brno and the opening of ‘Spot Holešovice’ in Prague’s Praha 7 district, which features an adventure playground and sports facilities.

Recent initiatives have expanded to include interactive and temporary community projects. In České Budějovice, the ‘CBiHřiště’ project is launching, utilizing a mobile application and Bluetooth technology to turn city walks into themed adventures involving tasks and quizzes. Meanwhile, in Zlín, a temporary adventure playground is being established at the former Smolí město site. Following the ‘Adventure Playgrounds’ concept, children are encouraged to use materials like pallets and pipes to build their own structures, promoting upcycling and manual skills while the area awaits the development of the re:public cultural center.

Municipalities are further expanding sports infrastructure to meet rising demand from youth athletes. In Domažlice, a multi-purpose field near the ice stadium is now operational, with plans for a fenced children's playground and a future skatepark. In Zlín, development continues with a new grass training area in the Mladcová district for rugby, baseball, and American football, alongside preparations for tennis facilities in the Vršava area intended for the 2028 Summer Children's Olympics.
