Czech wildfire risk escalates, Křečovice fire contained

Overview

After lifting the elevated fire‑danger warning in the Ústecký region on 24 July, Czech authorities eased restrictions on open‑air burning, fireworks and campfires, while keeping a permanent ban on smoking and portable stoves in the Český Švýcarsko national park. Drought conditions persisted around Děčín, but recent rain softened the threat elsewhere in northern Bohemia.

The early‑August heat wave triggered several incidents. On 3 August a small field fire between Vémyslice and Džbánice in South Moravia burned about 50 by 100 metres under an increased fire‑danger alert. The same day a larger forest and field fire erupted in the Poličany part of Křečovice (Benešov district). The blaze spread to nearby cottages, a garden house and fields, covering almost five hectares. Thirty‑one fire units, dozens of firefighters and a police helicopter equipped with a bambi‑bag were deployed. Two firefighters were hospitalized for heat‑related illness. The incident prompted the highest fire‑alert level, which was gradually reduced; by evening the fire was fully extinguished and the alert returned to the basic level. The cause remains under investigation and damage has not yet been assessed.

A separate incident at a care home in Blansko forced the evacuation of 25 residents, with eleven requiring medical care and damage estimated at 2.5 million CZK. Earlier, a larger blaze near Opava had spread to 17 hectares, causing about 8 million CZK in damage. Scientists continue to warn that Europe’s wildfire incidence could double by 2100, keeping Czech fire‑risk management a priority.
