Dacia and Renault Duster hybrid technology developments
Overview
Testing and market introduction of Dacia/Renault Duster hybrid technologies have progressed from experimental efficiency trials to commercial availability.
Initial developments focused on an experimental Dacia Duster prototype in Spain. This mobile laboratory tested the Horse H12 hybrid engine using Nexa 95, a renewable gasoline produced from organic residues. The tests aimed to evaluate if combining improved internal combustion efficiency with non-fossil fuels could reduce CO2 emissions as an alternative to full electrification.
In the Indian market, Renault is preparing to launch the Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 on October 17, 2026. The vehicle utilizes ‘Hybrid E-Tech’ technology, featuring a 1.8-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with two electric motors and a 1.4kWh battery pack. This configuration produces a combined output of approximately 160 hp and 172 Nm of torque. Unlike competitors using e-CVT systems, Renault employs a multi-mode automatic transmission with fixed gear ratios.
Renault has reported that initial stock sold out prior to the official pricing announcement. Consequently, the company has opened bookings for the new model with a deposit of 21,000 rupees. The hybrid system is designed to recharge via driving and braking without external charging, with Renault claiming an ARAI-certified mileage of 29 kilometers per liter. The model enters a competitive segment against rivals such as the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder.
