Dak Lak durian industry development and festival

Overview

In August 2026, the Dak Lak provincial government in Vietnam launched the inaugural provincial-level Durian Festival and a 30-day data-digitisation campaign to standardise planting-area codes and packing facilities for export markets. The festival, themed ‘Đắk Lắk Durian - Connecting Far and Wide’, officially opened on August 15 in Buôn Ma Thuột and ran through September 2.

Provincial Chairman Do Huu Huy emphasized a strategic shift from managing agricultural volume to managing agricultural value, focusing on quality, food safety, and traceability. This follows a period where the sector contributed approximately 1.1 billion USD to Vietnam’s export turnover in 2025. During the opening forum, former Deputy Chairman of the National Assembly Le Minh Hoan warned against rapid, unmanaged expansion driven by high prices, urging stakeholders to ensure production capacity does not outpace quality control.

By late August, the province received approval from the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) for 171 new codes, comprising 140 growing area codes and 31 packing facility codes. This expansion of official export channels is intended to stabilize exports and improve pricing during the peak harvest season. Local cooperatives, such as the Durian Krong Buk Agricultural Service Cooperative, noted that these approvals help alleviate previous pressures caused by limited approved codes.

To strengthen international ties, more than 60 Chinese enterprises visited Dak Lak in late August to explore transitioning from simple purchasing to building transparent, sustainable supply chains. To support these ambitions and meet Chinese regulatory requirements, local authorities are encouraging private investment in standardized testing laboratories. Currently, Dak Lak’s local testing capacity meets only 15-20% of demand during peak seasons, particularly for critical inspections such as cadmium and gold levels.
