DANA Adam storm recovery and catastrophe declaration

Overview

Recovery operations continue across Spanish regions following the devastating DANA Adam storm. The Spanish government, following an announcement by President Pedro Sánchez, is set to officially declare affected municipalities as catastrophe zones. This designation aims to activate ministerial aid programs to expedite reconstruction and recovery efforts.

In the Safor and Marina Alta regions, the Generalitat Valenciana has identified 71 instances of infrastructure damage, including 19.3 kilometers of forest tracks requiring reconstruction. In Oliva, a primary impact zone, the local Girona river overflowed after receiving 105 mm of rain in a single hour. The storm resulted in seven fatalities and approximately 2,600 evacuations.

To address the economic impact, First Vice President Carlos Cuerpo announced that the Insurance Compensation Consortium will hire approximately 150 additional experts to accelerate damage assessments and indemnity payments. The Consortium has received roughly 13,000 requests, with nearly half originating from Oliva. While agricultural losses were previously estimated at 21 million euros, the Consortium reported 90 million euros in damages from storms occurring in early October.

During a visit to the KikoParc campsite, Cuerpo met with business owners who expressed urgent concerns regarding the speed of financial assistance to prevent liquidity issues from threatening their continuity.
