Daniel Maldini driving accident and legal proceedings

Overview

Cagliari and Italian national team forward Daniel Maldini was involved in a multi-vehicle accident in Milan in mid-September. The collision, which occurred when Maldini’s vehicle failed to yield right-of-way at an intersection, involved a Porsche Carrera 4, a Volkswagen Golf, and a parked Mercedes, resulting in minor injuries for six people.

Maldini underwent sobriety testing following the crash. Breathalyzer results indicated alcohol levels of 0.91 g/l and 0.89 g/l, which exceed the legal limit in Italy. While an initial rapid saliva test suggested the presence of substances such as THC and ketamine, subsequent laboratory blood tests conducted at Niguarda Hospital confirmed results were ‘al di sotto del limite di cut off’ (below the cut-off limit), effectively ruling out illegal drug use.

As a consequence of the incident, Maldini’s driving license has been revoked, and he remains under investigation for driving under the influence of alcohol. Cagliari president Tommaso Giulini addressed the incident, expressing support for the player while emphasizing the importance of not driving after consuming alcohol. Maldini has since been discharged from the hospital and has returned to training with his club.

Following the laboratory confirmation that drug levels were ‘al di sotto del limite di cut off’, Maldini’s legal counsel and President Giulini expressed satisfaction, noting the results support the player’s claim of never using drugs. Despite the ongoing legal proceedings regarding his alcohol consumption, Maldini has continued his professional season and recently scored a winning goal for Cagliari.
