Datia by‑election: security tightened ahead of vote
Entities: Madhya Pradesh · Ashutosh Tiwari · Dr. Mohan Yadav · Bharat Singh Kushwaha · Datia
Overview
The Election Commission fixed the Datia Assembly by‑poll for 30 July 2026 with counting on 3 August after Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti was disqualified. The BJP fielded former minister Ashutosh Tiwari, while the Congress ran former Sewda MLA Kunwar Ghanshyam Singh. A transgender activist, Sanjana Singh Kinnar, contested on a Bharatiya Gan Warta Party ticket, adding a new dimension to the contest.
Rallies turned the race into a prestige battle in Bundelkhand. On 24 July, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav led a high‑profile road‑show in Datia, accompanied by senior BJP leaders and candidate Tiwari, urging voters to back the BJP and framing the election as a fight against “cut‑claw” opponents.
In the final days before voting, the district administration deployed intensive security measures. The Central Reserve Police Force and state police conducted near‑10‑km flag marches involving about 600 personnel, placing at least four officers at each of the 291 polling stations, with heightened presence at 233 critical and 18 vulnerable booths. A 48‑hour silence period began after campaigning ended on 28 July, with strict enforcement of election rules. Voter concerns now centre on farmer distress over fertilizer shortages, crop losses, youth unemployment and inadequate infrastructure as the poll approaches.
